CEBU Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal called on the government to do something about the massacre in the province of Maguindanao.
Among those killed in the incident were women and a dozen Mindanao-based journalists.
“(The acts are) unheard of, and horrifying,” Cardinal Vidal said.
The Archbishop urged political aspirants not to resort to violence and to just focus on presenting their platforms for governance instead when they campaign for next year’s elections.
Media organizations have issued separate statements regarding the massacre.
“The press wasn’t targeted. But the journalists were there, doing their job, when law and order broke down and respect for human values collapsed. What special protection could the press have in that setting? The press, the women – no one was spared,” said Pachico A. Seares, Cebu Citizens-Press Council executive director.
