
WOMEN of a Naga tribe are praying for peace in northeastern India which has been in uproar since police shot and killed two boys and wounded 82 others.
Lucy Lolia, publicity secretary of the Mao Naga Women Welfare Association, said members launched chain prayers on May 10, four days after the shooting. Most of those wounded were women.
Mao is one of 30 or so Naga tribes in northeastern India.
The shooting took place on May 6 at Mao Gate, a village in the Senapati district of Manipur bordering Nagaland state.
Naga people in Manipur were protesting their government’s refusal to allow Thuingaleng Muivah to visit his ancestral village in the state. Muivah heads a faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland that wants four Naga-dominated areas in Manipur to be part of a greater Nagaland state.
