THE Cebu archdiocese has no inkling as to who will succeed Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal upon his retirement. But a local paper, the Cebu Daily News, named ten possible successors of the cardinal.
Of the 10 bishops, six are from Cebu and have previously served in the diocese.
The possible nominees are Bishop Leopoldo Tumulak, Bishop John Du, Bishop Camilio Gregorio, Bishop Precioso Cantillas, Bishop Antonieto Cabajog, Auxilliary Bishop Emilio Bataclan, Archbishop Jose Palma, Auxilliary Bishop Julito Cortes, Archbishop Angel Lagdameo and Bishop Isabelo Abarquez.
“It’s usually the unexpected who will get the nomination,” liturgical master of ceremonies Father Expedito Torrevillas II said.
In previous reports, Cardinal Vidal had said he would prefer a Cebuano to succeed him.
Father Torrevillas said that a Cebuano archbishop would be a big factor for the archdiocese.
“On the human level, it would be better if a Cebuano will be chosen by the Pope,” he said.
No Cebuano has ever been appointed as Cebu archbishop.
A Cebuano archbishop would not have a hard time adjusting to the Cebuano dialect and can easily reach out to the warmth of Cebuano homes, Father Torrevillas said.
