A CATHOLIC group has published a manual to help protect the rights of people who find themselves unfortunate enough to be in police custody.
The Catholic Human Rights Committee (CHRC) published the Police Cell Manual 2010 to raise awareness among potential and existing detainees as to what their rights are and what police can and can’t do.
The free 476-page manual contains all the information a detainee needs to ensure his or her rights are not abused while in custody.
It includes detail on many possible rights infringements such as in security checks, the confiscation of belongings, the use of handcuffs and ropes, verbal abuse and harsh treatment.
It also offers information on taking legal action and offers previous cases as examples.
