THE Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines has designated the last Sunday of October as Prison Sunday and the week before it as Prison Awareness Week.
The annual event seeks to focus attention on inmates who are languishing in jail paying for their crimes, prayers for all jail wardens and employees, and reflection and action on issues related to justice and reforming people.
This year, the bishops’ Commission on Prison Pastoral Care has chosen the theme “We Have the same father…one God who created us,” and has spent the week in public discussions of restorative justice and juvenile justice welfare.
Philippine Jesuit Prison Service, one of numerous groups of religious and lay volunteers in prison apostolate, has developed the website Philippine Jesuit Prison Service: Rebuilding lives, rekindling hope, so that people will be aware of their brethrens’ conditions and needs in prisons.
