AN archbishop yesterday challenged one of the principal authors of the reproductive health (RH) bill in Congress to a “grand debate” on the issue.
Archbishop Ramon Arguelles of Lipa said Edcel Lagman can contact the office of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) if he accepts the challenge.
On Wednesday, Lagman said he wants to have an “enlightening session” with representatives from the Catholic Church after Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle expressed willingness to resume discussions.
Archbishop Arguelles said there is nothing wrong with debate but the Church will have to do it by proxy. “Bishops or priests cannot face Lagman directly so somebody else will have to stand in for them,” he said in an interview over Church-run Radio Veritas. The reason is that he expects Lagman to again say Church leaders have no business arguing against the RH bill when they are not married.
The archbishop said many lay people are qualified to debate with Lagman. He mentioned Jo Imbong of the CBCP legal office, former Manila mayor Lito Atienza, Eric Manalang of Pro-life Philippines and Congressman Roilo Golez.
Archbishop Arguelles said the Church cannot allow the RH bill to pass because it will destroy the Filipino family, morality and culture.
