THREE people, including a Catholic nun, were killed while two others were injured when their vehicle collided with a cargo truck in Malvar town Thursday, police said.
Batangas police identified the fatalities as Flordelina Espiritu, a nun at Three Kings Parish Council; Jasmin Gracia Liwag, 35; and a certain Emily, a member of the parish council in Barangay San Vicente, Gapan, Nueva Ecija.
Injured were the vehicle’s driver Larry Mendoza Tumangan, 47; and Maribel Gervacio Sabat, 45. Both are also employees of the parish council and residents of Gapan, Nueva Ecija.
They are being treated at Mary Mediatrix Hospital in Lipa City.
Police said the victims were on the southbound lane of the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR) tollway aboard a Nissan Frontier (CRR-986) when they rammed the back portion of a cargo truck (RFU-328) upon reaching KM-75 of Barangay San Andres, Malvar town at around 6:02 a.m.
Malvar police, STAR tollway crew, and Philippine Red Cross took awhile in pulling the victims from the wreckage because they were pinned to the back portion of the truck, which was loaded with 39 tons of dried corn.
